But porn emails are not as common as you might think, researchers say

Europe named world’s spam capital

Europe is now the world’s top region for producing spam emails, Trend Micro’s new online threat report suggests.

The security firm’s researchers found that spam continued to grow between January and June this year, with commercial, scam-based and medical emails making up 65 per cent of global total. Contrary to popular perception, only four per cent of junk emails were pornographic.

Europe overtook Asia-Pacific, North America and South America to be crowned the spam capital of the world.

Meanwhile, Asia-Pacific had the highest number of victims of malware infections, while India and Brazil had the most computers used in botnets by cyber criminals distributing malware.

North America produced the most malicious URLs, with the most commonly blocked by Trend Micro being adult websites.
