Steve Ballmer hints more than one device will be unveiled

Microsoft’s iPad-rivalling tablet to launch this Christmas

Microsoft will launch a tablet PC to rival the iPad in time for Christmas, Steve Ballmer has said.

Speaking at the London School of Economics today, the Microsoft CEO did not say who would be making the tablet or tablets, according to Reuters.

"You’ll see new slates with Windows on them. You’ll see them this Christmas," he told students, staff and journalists at LSE.

"Certainly we have done work around the tablet as both a productivity device and a consumption device," he added.

Ballmer’s comments follow the revelation last week that he was only awarded half his maximum annual bonus for the last financial year, supposedly due in part to Microsoft’s failure to produce a rival to the iPad quickly enough.

He was seen showing off a prototype of HP’s Windows-based Slate as far back as January, but the device has not yet hit the market.
