Hackers have managed to crack pre-release firmware for the upcoming Apple TV just as the network media player begins shipping to customers in the US and Canada.
Posting on the iPhone Dev Team Blog, members of the group said that they were able to crack the iOS firmware which raises the possibility of early availability of a jailbreak allowing non-Apple approved applications and the possibility of additional features. not provided as standard.
The team had used a new exploit known as SHAtter in order to gain access to the encryption keys used to encrypt the Apple TV firmware which is housed on the firm’s public distribution servers. The group published details of how to obtain the firmware and decrypt it so there’s probably a good deal of hacker attention being directed towards the Apple TV right now, for better or worse.
