People who illegally download music and films from the internet could face having their internet cut off, according to new UK government measures.
The BBC reports that the Department for Business, Inovation and Skills (BIS) has amended its Digital Britain report to give broadcasting regulator Ofcom greater powers to tackle piracy.
The measures are reportedly likely to include suspending the internet accounts of "hardcore copyright pirates". Digital Britain, published in June, gave Ofcom until 2012 to consider the necessity of technical measures to catching pirates.
However, according to the BBC, BIS issued a statement today saying that the planned timeframe is "too long to wait".
"It’s become clear there are widespread concerns that the plans as they stand could delay action, impacting unfairly upon rights holders," Stephen Timms, minister for Digital Britain, told the BBC.
Business Secretary Lord Mandelson is thought to have personally intervened to step up the policy.
