Internet provider reduces cost of fibre optic internet subscriptions

Virgin cuts broadband prices

Virgin Media has cut the price of its broadband, following the roll-out of its fibre-optic network last month.

The network operator has chosen to celebrate this completion by restructuring the pricing for its broadband packages, with the promise that they will continue to be free of traffic management.

For the 50MB fibre optic package, which was originally priced at £50 per month, the cost of subscriptions will now cost consumers £28 when purchased with a phone line or £38 per month for the internet package alone.

It also launched the Freedom netbook, which has been optimised to work with 50MB broadband speeds and is available as a ‘free’ add-on to certain product bundles.

For those customers who live beyond the reach of the new fibre optic network, Virgin is offering a variety of different price brackets, calculated by internet usage. The move follows criticisms of the internet industry from Ofcom, which said that many customers are bring promised broadband speeds that cannot be supported by their phone line.

“Our new speed promise demonstrates we are putting our money where our mouth is,” said Virgin Media’s CEO Neil Berkett. “We’ve upgraded our National broadband service with the latest superfast technology, meaning our customers can now benefit from faster speeds at no extra cost and with the launch of our phone-line service, we’re able to save customers even more money on bundled services.”
