Intel is pushing for the creation of a new PC category that will sit between netbooks and traditional laptops, dubbed ultra-thin.
Speaking to CNET, Intel’s chief executive Paul Otellini said that ‘ultra-thins’ would be inexpensive devices that give consumers what they are missing in netbooks.
He described them as being cheaper than a regular laptop, but more profitable for the channel than netbooks. He added that they would have comparatively more power and also be able to handle 3D gaming and office applications better than existing netbooks.
Described as being devices that have a 13-inch screen and are powered by Intel’s ultra-low-power chipsets, they would sit above its and Microsoft’s XP limit of 11-inch screens for netbooks.
Otellini also added his voice to the growing numbers of industry executives who predict netbooks will primarily become a telecoms device rather than an IT product.
