Strong sales for department despite week of disruption across UK

Electricals gives John Lewis a boost

John Lewis has described sales of electricals as ‘stunning’, despite strikes, flooding and adverse weather affecting stores across the country.

Overall, sales for the week ending June 13th were up 2.8 per cent. At the same time, electricals soared by 8.2 per cent, leading selling operations director David Barford to describe the performance as ‘stunning’.

Home electronics, as well as white goods, were amongst the key drivers of sales, according to the retailer.

"We had tube strikes in London, floods in Sheffield, wet weather at the beginning of the week and hot weather at the end," explained Barford. "All of these factors contributed in their own way to our trading performance."

He added that the tube strikes had resulted in a ‘significant’ drop in footfall at its Central London stores.
