Intends to acquire Flip Video vendor Pure Digital Technologies for $590m

Cisco to enter camcorder market

Cisco is set to move into the video recording market, announcing its intentions to purchase the manufacturer of the Flip Video device, Pure Digital Technologies for $590m (£398m).

The acquisition is part of the vendor’s strategy to break into the lucrative home technology market. "Pure Digital is key to Cisco’s strategy to expand our momentum in the media-enabled home and to capture the consumer market transition to visual networking," commented senior vice president of Cisco’s Corporate Development and Consumer Groups, Ned Hooper.

The move would bring it into direct competition with established vendors such as Sony, Canon, Panasonic and JVC. "This acquisition will take Cisco’s consumer business to the next level as the company develops new video capabilities and drive the next generation of entertainment and communication experiences," added Hooper.

It comes just days after Cisco signed up Micro-P as its latest distribution partner who will handle its entire Linksys by Cisco consumer range.
