Sony has unveiled a major management reshuffle and reorganisation affecting all aspects of its business.
The vendor will split its business into two major groups, supported by a third, with the Vaio division falling into the new networked products and services group, alongside Sony Computer Entertainment, mobile and Walkman unit.
Current SCE chief executive Kaz Hirai who made his name in the firm’s PlayStation business will be its first president.
Meanwhile, the other – its consumer products group – will include its television, digital imaging, home audio and video businesses. Hiroshi Yoshioka, currently executive vice president of Sony and president of its TV business group, will become its first president.
These will be joined by a third cross-divisional group – the common software and technology team – which will be charged with ensuring compatibility between the two new division’s products.
"This reorganisation is designed to transform Sony into a more innovative, integrated and agile global company with its next generation of leadership firmly in place," commented Howard Stringer, who was also promoted from chief executive to president of Sony.
"The changes we’re announcing today will accelerate the transformation of the company that began four years ago. They will now make it possible for all of Sony’s parts to work together to assume a position of worldwide leadership and, together, achieve great things."
