Laptop sales could come grinding to a halt later this year as the recession continues to impact consumer and business sales, according to research group IDC.
The group warned that according to its figures, laptop sales will fall by five per cent as the recession hits spending; despite significant declines in average selling prices also being predicted.
However, the firm said that continued strong sales of netbooks would help to boost sales of portable computers, at around 7.5 per cent. But that is still down drastically on last year’s growth, which was 40 per cent year-on-year.
"Spending will slow in the business and the consumer space," commented research manager at IDC Ezster Morvay. She warned that average selling prices and revenues were also likely to be hit by a combination of the aforementioned slowdown in spending, as well as a shift to the lower price, lower margin netbook footprint.
"In [terms of] portable PCs, the mini notebook segment will double so naturally that will lower overall ASPs," she added.
