Desktops and flat screens dominate post-Christmas spending according to GfK

PCs and TV drive January sales

Sales of desktop PCs and flat screen televisions saw a huge boost in demand over the first two weeks of the year, according to figures released by GfK.

Value sales climbed by 7.7 per cent and 13.4 per cent respectively, while volume sales were up 4.1 per cent and 14.3 per cent, leading sales of consumer electronics in both weeks.

"After six months of decline across the electricals market, the January sales have sparked three weeks of growth year-on-year," commented GfK’s commercial director James Randall.

However, the research firm warned that the growth was likely to be short lived. "While three weeks are a trend, sadly this ray of sunshine might not mark the end of the downturn," added Randall.
