Mac security firm warns of botnet and rootkit bundled with illegal version of software

Malware piggybacks on pirated iWork 09

Mac security firm Intego is warning of a serious malware threat being distributed via illegally downloaded copies of Apple’s iWork 09, many believed to have been spurred on by the recent announce that it was removing the requirement for a serial number.

The package is reportedly installed alongside the full version of iWork 09, with the malware, called iServices.A being given full and unfettered access to all root services.

According to the firm, once installed it immediately connects to a remote server. It also downloads a secondary piece of malware that connects the infected Mac to a botnet.

Intego believes over 20,000 people have already downloaded the rogue installer.
