Laptops expected to hit 116m units in 2008

Global laptop shipments are expected to set new records in 2008, thanks to increases in key components that have plagued manufacturers during 2007, as well as continuing demand for portable computers as people upgrade their current desktop models.

According to Taiwan-based Topology Research Institute, shipments are expected to reach 116 million units.

Two of the vendors expected to benefit hugely from the growth of the market are Acer and Apple who both have seen massive market share gains during 2007. Both vendors are expected to see their volume sales grow by over 30 per cent year on year during 2008.

The Topology Research Institute is also predicting that both will see their market share grow by one per cent.

The institute also expects first-tier notebook maker, Wistron to enjoy a 40 per cent jump in shipments during 2008, with its volume shipments increasing from the 12 million units projected this year to over 17 million units next year.
