Glitches, disconnects, long login queues, a DDoS attack - not a smooth start for Blizzard

World of Warcraft expansion hit by launch problems

It’s not been a smooth start for popular PC online RPG World of Warcraft’s latest expansion – Warlords of Draenor – which went live this week.

Players have reported regular server disconnects, long login queues (some waiting several hours to login), and a glitch where a user’s character gets stuck in mid-air when flying through a player garrison (pictured).

On top of that, developer Blizzard’s servers were hit by a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack.

"Europe was our first region to launch, and we encountered a few issues due to the sheer number of players attempting to enter Draenor from a single location," said a Blizzard spokesperson on the US forums.

"We worked to add multiple new ways to access Draenor, and this helped ease some of the initial rush into the new expansion. While that solution helped a ton for our North American launch, we ran into a few other issues, including a distributed denial of service attack, that resulted in increased latency."

Another added: "We recently pushed a server change that caused disconnects, and as a result login services are heavily impacted as players attempt to (re)log in to the game. If you experience issues logging in, please be patient and wait a few minutes before trying again. We’re continuing to work to address other stability and latency issues as well as make additional improvements in game performance."

An EU Blizzard spokesperson commented: "Due to technical issues players may experience latency or loss of connection on all realms. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience while this is being resolved."

A video is also doing the rounds online that shows a player using a repeatable item turn-in quest to level up from level 90 to 99 quickly. However, upon reaching level 99 he is disconnected, his account is temporarily disabled and his character is reverted to level 90.
