Comments come following Oculus Rift's approval of adult content

‘Porn industry will drive mainstream adoption of virtual reality’

An author has claimed that porn will be the driving force behind mainstream consumer adoption of virtual reality headset devices.

Several headsets, including the Oculus Rift, Sony Project Morpheus, HTC Vive, Samsung Gear VR, Microsoft HoloLens, Razer OSVR, are set to do battle in this emerging sector.

John Straw, iDisrupted author and chairman of Thomas Cook’s Digital Advisory Board, has looked back on platforms such as VHS, and claims that it won the war against Sony Betamax because of the adoption of the format by the porn industry.

He believes the same will happen with virtual reality.

He said: "What will drive standard adoption again is porn. The prospect of making porn that immersive and interactive for the porn industry is simply huge.”

Facebook-owned Oculus has last month commented that it is OK with the use of porn on its upcoming virtual reality platform, saying it’s an open platform and they don’t control which software can run on it.

Early pieces of first-person virtual reality porn content are already being produced, while some businesses are making sex toys to work with virtual reality porn.

Lovense, a manufacturer of sex tech toys, and Virtual Real Porn, have announced a partnership to introduce ‘haptics’ – or touch feedback – to porn virtual reality videos.

"The sex toys created by Lovense will be integrated with porn applications that will run on the Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear virtual reality headsets. The toys will allow for a more immersive experience and will make the user feel like they’re actually in the movie they are watching," added iDisrupted in a statement.

"The future of virtual reality will soon be here and all we can do is wait and see who will be crowned the king."
