Successor to Apple’s Mini tablet rumoured to feature high-resolution Retina screen, while its bigger brother is said to be thinner

iPad 5 and iPad Mini with Retina display due this year?

Following rumours that Apple’s announcement of the iPhone 5S would take place on September 10th, new sources have claimed that follow-up tablets to the iPad and iPad Mini will be unveiled in October.

The devices are rumoured to launch before the end of the year. This pattern of separate events in September and October would be in keeping with Apple’s previous iPhone and iPad reveals.

Bloomberg reports the possibility of new models for Apple’s tablets is hardly new, and seems to support previous suggestions that the iPad 5 will be slimming down, adopting a bezel frame more like the iPad Mini.

It’s already been reported that the 7.9-inch iPad Mini could feature a Retina screen – read this iPad Mini 2 release date, specs, price and news round up here.

Bloomberg’s sources seem to suggest, however, that the Retina-equipped iPad Mini will be a standalone refresh of the tablet, rather than the awaited iPad Mini 2, which is rumoured instead to have been pushed back to a release in early 2014.

The new line of Apple products will feature the latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system, iOS7, which was announced several months ago.

The update is arguably the most radical visual change to the native iPhone and iPad software for some time, and despite currently being only available to developers has already inspired both praise and criticism.
