Bill Gates has drunk water made from human faeces, showcasing technology that could provide clean water to developing countries.
The Microsoft founder tasted the water that was created through an Omniprocessor system.
The project is being backed by the charity WaterAid, which said that 748 million people worldwide lack clean drinking water.
Peter Janicki, the developer of the Omniprocessor, says the ‘sewer sludge’ is first boiled, where process water vapour is separated from the solids.
The solids are then put into a fire, where the steam drives an engine producing electricity for the system’s processor.
The water is then put through a cleaning system.
A blog post by Gates read: “The water tasted as good as any I’ve had out of a bottle. And having studied the engineering behind it, I would happily drink it every day. It’s that safe.”
