Announcement expected at this year’s WDC

Apple to launch freemium iRadio, says analyst

After a meeting with Apple management, Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty has told investors that the firm may debut a new internet-based service.

AppleInsider reports that Huberty informed Apple investors that there could be a surprise announcement at the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference in June. The analyst believes the announcement could be a new type of internet service such as streaming music, or possibly a mobile payment system.

"We believe Apple could charge either developers or users for some of these services, which could boost Apple’s annuitized revenue stream and better monetize its large user base," Huberty said.

"For example, Apple could offer a streaming music service using a freemium model."

WSJ reported back in September that Apple was looking to build an internet radio service.

People familiar with Apple’s plans told the publication that the service will focus on virtual stations to play music on a web browser or dedicated apps.
