Amazon offers gift cards for used electronics including iPhones and iPads in new initiative

Amazon details consumer electronics trade-in program

Amazon US is now offering consumers the chance to trade in used electronics, such as iPhones and iPads, in exchange for Amazon gift cards.

The Electronics Trade-In section of Amazon.com allows owners to search for their eligible items, register them to be traded and then have them posted for free to Amazon. Multiple items can all be popped into a single box.

Amazon stated that it ‘offers some of the top trade-in values for iPhones and iPads’, with the latest generation 3G iPads reaching up to $460. The company added that trade-in numbers ‘spike up to five times’ when new devices are announced.

Apple already offers its own ‘Reuse and Recycling’ service, which allows users to trade in old Apple iPhones and iPads, as well as desktop and notebook Macs, in return for money.

Speaking to TWICE, a spokesperson from Amazon said that the trend for trading-in was expected to grow, with Amazon seeing ‘triple digit growth in trade-ins’ in 2013. The popularity of the program has led Amazon to add headphones, portable speakers, blu-ray player and wireless router categories to the existing list of over 35,000 products it will accept.

PCR has contacted Amazon UK to see if the program will be rolled out in the UK in the future, but has not yet received a reply.
